Looking fly on your fantastic voyage!
This holiday season, our self care blog will give you beauty wings to soar high! Here are tips to turn the plane ride into a beauty haven.
A quick self- imposed face massage, or “Fassage”, makes you feel less cloudy and think more clearly, helping your body clock adjust to new time zones. Fassages activate the lymphatic system, and lymphatic massage helps to depuff skin by managing fluids. The method rejuvenates skin almost instantly through its natural detoxification. (Get approval from your doctor, as this deeply stimulating procedure may not be a good fit for some medical conditions.)
Makeup artist Min Kim told Allure magazine that she started with a face massage for star Margaret Qualley at the Cannes Film Festival when she suffered from jet lag “to improve circulation…and help with dark circles around the eyes.”
The same fassage I offer clients can be scaled down for in-flight delight. While inside the treatment room, I use just my hands to create vibrational “sculpting” moves through various measures of pressure. This is done to assist oxygen and blood flow.
Turn back time and turn flying into a glamorous adventure!
But on-the-go, it’s on you! Get started by washing your hands thoroughly and apply an oil, sans ingredients you know to be allergic to. (Future 5 Elements’ Golden Touch Oil is totally plant-based and the oil I prefer to use, as natural fatty acids are hand mixed into this sensational-smelling oil. I have noticed it rescues fragile, dehydrated skin- not an easy feat for any beauty product. ) Reminder: TSA regulations say all liquids must weigh 3 ounces or less.
Now make a fist, and rest your cheek on it for ten seconds, then release. Locate the jaw muscle, next to your ears, and gently massage in small circles, traveling down the neck. Repeat four times. This gentle, repetitive movement helps release facial tension, a main cause of heavy eyelids and even headaches.
Continue by using your ring finger, first at the inner corner of your eyes, and then gently moving up to the eyebrow. Move to the outer corner of eyes then underneath, still drawing tiny circles as you go.
For the forehead, swipe right! Then left; Initiate side to side, up and down movements using all your fingers. Repeat four times. Your facial expressions will become relaxed, and poof! Puffiness is reduced.
I was so happy to read in Seattle Refined that the fassage I gave their reporter yielded positive “crazy results”. Teen Vogue’s dermatological expert, Dr. Sejal Shah, also suggests fassage on-the-go: “to improve a dull complexion, gently give your face a massage (when you land) to increase blood flow to the skin.”
Vogue.com reported that Lufthansa Airlines installed air humidifiers in the first-class cabins to refresh passengers; Forbes.com writes that Air Malta now has a “Sky Spa”, offering free head and shoulder massages on select flights for all passengers.
Orange Juice Boost.
With no emails or texts to interrupt your rest, a plane ride is a perfect haven to self care and groom on-the-go.
Most know that oranges are vital sources of Vit C; but the fragrant fruit is also a beauty muse! The Tribune reported that the mere smell of an orange can reduce stress by 70%. With organic skin brightening qualities, the fruit juice also dries up acne. (My own skin issues inspired me to become an esthetician.)
Actress Salma Hayek gave us insight into her beauty regimen on her social media accounts: the ageless Latina beauty starts her day with an infused shot of orange juice! So request some free in-flight OJ, dab onto a napkin, and apply to your face. Leave on for two minutes, and rinse off with a second water-doused towelette.
Pigments in citric juices, or “carotenoids”, help maintain a youthful glow. FashionGoneRouge.com reports that supermodel Miranda Kerr uses a citrus-infused energizing mist while flying.
Oranges’ Vitamin C hydrates while doing double duty as a natural astringent, reducing oiliness from your trip’s junk food-fueled moments. (Ah, admit it!) The vitamin A kicks in to strengthen the outer, dermal layer of skin, which often becomes fragile during extensive travel.
Got Milk?!
Cleopatra, renowned worldwide for her beauty, was known to bathe and treat her skin with fresh donkey milk. Milk is packed with protein and the “beauty vitamin,” Biotin.
Milk acts as a natural skin softening agent to hydrate and nourish. The calcium-drenched drink can be used as a cleanser to ditch dirt and bacteria, while simultaneously soothing itchiness and skin irritations. According to The India Times, “Milk contains lactic acid, and it can help treat sun damage.” This is particularly helpful if you’re flying home from a sun-drenched destination.
Water works.
Superstar David Bowie offered fluid style advice for decades, proclaiming “I’m an instant star- just add water!” You know the benefits of hydration- including feeling less hungry- but here is a fact that isn’t all wet: drinking lots of water will help prevent cramping in your legs as you sit and sit in the plane’s low-humidity environment.
Ask for, and add, lemon and lime wedges to naturally detox and alkalize your water. This assists with balancing the body’s PH level, keeping your head as sunny as the clear blue skies. Grab some honey from a flight attendant and add to water, too, for an instant immune system boost.
Just spent six bucks on a bottle of airport water? Put it to good use and tuck it horizontally under the back of your neck to help with travel-induced inflammation and overall friendly-skies stress.
